Expulsion at the Temple
"Cleansing of the Temple" is a compelling 36x48” oil on canvas piece inspired by the intense narrative in Mark 1:21-28. Mark records a chilling scene in the temple at Capernaum. Jesus was teaching from the law and the prophets when a man stood up and "cried out" in a voice that was not his own. Mark 1:24: "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!" (25) "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" (26) The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
I imagine this event from within the man's metaphysical space. From this vantage point, I can illustrate how terrifying Jesus must be to the agents of darkness. In the foreground, people stand diminished atop isolated columns, explaining how separated from the world possessed persons report to be. The cup symbolizing Christ's sacrifice appears boldly in full view of the damned spirit. I show a globulous, six-skulled void separating from the man's soul (middle). Jesus stands facing it, arm outstretched repelling the foe. The interior of the Capernaum temple dissolves into the astral plane of the man's innerspace. A two-point perspective allows me to bend the temple in half, revealing the entry (middle left) and the back wall (middle right), in an effort to demonstrate how multiple dimensions do exist simultaneously.
